Lets Talk Sheen

Since the release of the 2014 Color Forecast, we’ve spent a good deal of time focusing on color. Now we’d like to talk about the second step to choosing paint – the sheen of paint (also referred to as “finish”). Depending on the room and the look you are aiming to achieve, the sheen of the paint can have a significant impact on the final outcome. Below we’ve outlined the top four sheens for you, and as always, if you have a question, just give us a call or use our contact form.

Flat – no sheen, good for use in low traffic areas, most often used on ceilings and bedroom walls.
Matte – subtle sheen, good for use in busy areas, most often used in hallways, family rooms and kid’s bedrooms.
Eggshell – soft sheen – more “washable” than flat or matte finishes, most often used in kitchens and bathrooms.
Satin or Semi-Gloss – noticeable sheen – can withstand repeated cleaning, most often used on trim, doors and cabinetry.

2013 Color of the Year

The 2013 Color of the Year for Pantone is Emeral 17-5641!

It was a tight race, but with blue prevailing four times over the past ten years, Emerald Green will take its place atop the charts as the “Color of the Year” for 2013. Described as powerful, grounding, and cooling, this vibrant green will bring a nice change of pace in the year ahead. Expect to see an array of emerald green accessories popping up over the next few months, followed by household items and wallpaper and paint colors as well.
While the Color of the Year has historically been a bold color, Pantone has also added 175 new colors to the 2013 collection. Among these are muted earth tones, rich and luxurious neutrals and fun accent colors. Check back soon for the full 2013 Color Forecast and our suggestions on how to incorporate these fresh new colors into your home.

Sprucing Up For A Sale

Are you thinking of putting your house on the market this spring? If so, there are a few things you should be aware of if you’d like to get the maximum value possible for your home. Because of the real estate crash that accompanied the crash in the economy, buyers now have the upper hand, but getting your home ready for sale doesn’t have to be a hassle with John Neill Painting & Decorating serving the Main Line and the greater Philadelphia area.

As mentioned in a recent article in The Philadelphia Inquirer, little details that were often overlooked in the past are now being scrutinizing by the buyers. Staging has almost become a necessity when getting your home ready for sale, and exterior maintenance and interior paint touch ups can make or break a deal. Updated kitchens and bathrooms still rank high on the list as well, so be sure to consult with a reputable real estate agent about recommended updates if you’re aiming for a quick sale.
